一道变态的托福阅读句子简化题

一般情况下，考生看不懂托福阅读文章中的长难句大致有两个原因。一是生词过多或有生词处于句子关键位置;二是虽然整句没有生词，但复杂的句子结构和过多的修饰成分、从句造成了理解障碍。托福句子简化题的题干句，往往是有一定复杂度的长难句。

对应的，考生对句子简化题的处理，一般分为两个层面。第一层面，词汇语法基础一般的同学，更多侧重技巧，如选项句是否囊括题干句内各个分支信息，选项句是否传承了题干句主要逻辑关系等。对处在这个阶段的考生，句子简化题往往是难度较大的题目;第二层面，词汇量大、具备相当语法功底的同学可以摒弃技巧，直接读懂原句，再挑出句意和原句最一致的选项即可。对于处于第二层面的考生，句子简化题因不涉及大段文章阅读，反而是难度一般、甚至较低的题型。

然而，TPO40 P2里一道罕见的句子简化题对考生提出了更高的要求：

提示:下面句子句尾的diversity指biodiversity. 上文提到The tropics contain many more species  overall than an equivalent area at higher latitudes.

The tropics contain a larger surface area of land than higher latitudes---  a fact that is not always evident when we examine commonly  used projections of  Earth’s curved surface, since this tends to  exaggerate the areas of land in the  higher latitudes --- and some  biogeographers regard the differences in diversity  as a reflection of  this effect.

A. Some biogeographers believe that  the tropics have a larger surface area  than they actually do because of  the distortions produced by projections of  Earth’s curved surface.

B. High levels of diversity in the  tropics are sometimes attributed to the  fact that the tropics have more  surface area of land than the higher latitudes  do, though distortions  in commonly used projections may seem to suggest  otherwise.

C. Because biogeopraphers disagree on  whether or not the tropics are  correctly represented in projections of  Earth’s surface, it is difficult to  determine the relationship their surface area has to their diversity.

D. Most biogeographers agree that the tropics contain  a larger surface area  of land than higher latitudes to, but they  disagree on whether or not the  tropics’ level of diversity is a  reflection of that larger surface area.

本题题干句为and连接的两个并列句，其中第一个并列句后跟了个同位语(我们遇到的同位语的往往有先行词，本句里的相当于先行句)。同位语a  fact后跟了较长的后置定语从句，这个定语从句里有自己的，间状语从句和原因状语从句。当然，本文重点不在语法分析，故此处省略XXXX字。题干句语法结构不难，但处于第一层面的同学基本无法解题。    如从逻辑关系入手，题干句里没明显逻辑关系(since出现在同位语部分，按因果关系选必错)，选项句则有因果、转折等特征;又如按分支信息数量判断同样必错，比如原句里有信息1，信息2….信息N，而正确选项恰恰少了部分信息。很多处于第二层面的词汇量大、语法基础强的同学同样反映原句看不懂。实际上，对这些学霸同学造成理解障碍的是原并列句中第一句要表达的、不熟悉的知识。

我们一直习惯的世界地图如下图：

细心的同学会发现(也许中学时期就已注意到)这个图在两个Poles处有明显畸变。如北极附近Greenland目测面积接近Australia，实际上前者面积不到后者1/3;又如Antarctic目测面积大于South   America甚至Africa，事实上Antarctic要比后两者小得多。

把地球的曲面(curved   surface)表面展现(projection)在平面上不可能没有畸变，几乎所有世界地图在都放大了非赤道区域。纬度越高，这种放大效应越剧烈。比如上图里，最上端和最下端分别对应北极点和南极点，即北纬/南纬90度的那两个点，但上面地图里被呈现成了“边”。

ETS认为这是考生应有的常识。一旦有了这个知识辅助，我们就可以轻易看懂原句，接着挑出正确选项B。

实际上SAT考试也曾出现类似的题目：

Representing a round world on a flat  surface is impossible without some  ____: the Mercator projection map  shows Greenland as over ten times larger than  Mexico, a country in fact  only slightly smaller than Greenland.

A. oversight B. simplification C. distortion D. sophistication E.  superficiality

在整个TPO里这种需要强背景知识辅助的句子简化题基本仅此一道(TPO19有一道罕见的Inference题)，但考生在备考期间仍应主动积累各个学科的背景知识及对应词汇。
